An open Gates?

Here is a brief overview of the media's report on the nomination of Robert Gates to replace Donald Rumsfeld as the new defense secretary of the USA.

The New York Times emphasizes the sharp critics made by Mr. Gates about the handling of the war in Irak by his predecessor. Change is seems to be in the air, though the newspaper does not try to predict the next step of the administration.

According to Euronews, leakings say the Irak Study Group, which Mr. Gates is part of, may well recommend the retreat of The US troops in Irak. Some analysts say the nomination of Mr. Gates favour ties with allies and could be the stating point for a renewed multilateral action.

The Independent reviews the possible outocomes of the war in Irak. A phased withdrawal is by far the most likely oucome.
